I have been firmly in the leggings-are-not-pants camp for years now. For many reasons, mostly just because if I can see your lady business I don’t really feel you have selected an adequate amount of clothing. And, a little bit, because not everyone looks good in leggings. Especially not if said leggings are baggy, too tight, or a little bit see-through.
I’ve read many arguments regarding leggings as pants, including this one by Fat Heffalump calling it ableist , classist, sizeist, bullshit. I can’t imagine I would criticise someone in any of those situations, personally, but I take the point all the same and it did make me think about things in a different way (although I would like to state for the record that wearing leggings with a tunic top, in my opinion, is not wearing leggings as pants, and I would therefore disagree that the picture within this post depicts someone wearing leggings as pants).
Politics aside, after the purchase of some leggings (or, technically, ponte pants that are so thick consensus is they are actually pants anyway, from people who are leggings haters. They even have seams) I have come to two final conclusions regarding where I stand on leggings.
1. Most people who state leggings are not pants and should never be worn in public probably haven’t put on a pair. Including my former self. They are so warm and comfy!
2. You can wear anything at all if you rock it with confidence, especially with good hair.
The final straw for me in purchasing leggings was this pic in the Ecco store when I was looking for some boots (side note: Why is it so freaking hard to buy boots that are waterproof? Surely the time I want to wear boots is when it is raining?)
That and Victoria Beckham.
So I think I have finally succumbed. If you cannot see your lady bits (note how all these pics have a covered crotch?), your underpants are not on show and your leggings fit, wear those babies with abandon, good hair and a smile. It’s only fashion at the end of the day.
